BROWN LEAVES

Brown leaves run down the street
Chased by a brisk southerly breeze.
A procession of clouds march across the sky
Lower, darker, than the sky nymphs
That preceded them.
Yellow leaves bid farewell
To the trees of their lives
Beginning their return journey to the earth.
Skeletal trunks and branches
Wave a goodbye.
A frisk breath chatter along the pavement,
A few birds shivering at its voice.

And the rains come.
Chilled,
Slowly covering the earth
And softening the dry leaves.
The wind shifts
And the cold, transparent rain
Becomes soft white.
