OF ICE AND SPRING

The ice still lay upon the lake
Snow still clung to the land
Where the sun was denied entrance
By the cedar grove.
But spring is in the air
Spring within the mottled sky above.
The vernal chorale in ascent
A fantasia of honking geese
And whispering chickadees.
The wind is playing lyre
On pine needles and cedar boughs.
Droplets of rain drumming in counterpoint
The demisemiquaver twill
Of a snow bird bound for the Arctic breeding ground.
The new song
The rebirth of harmony
As always.
