The Perfect Storm

Question: If the movie Perfect Storm is based on a true story, why then can I not find any info on what happened for the fall 1991 season?

Answer: Likely the reason is that you are searching on The Perfect Storm which is the book and movie title but not what meteorologists initially called the storm. Most references to it initially were as the Halloween Storm or unnamed storm of October 1991 or perhaps included in discussions of Hurricane Grace in 1991.

The US National Weather Service has discussions on this storm at:
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/satgallery/hurricanes/unnamed91/unnamed91.html
and
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/satgallery/cyclones/pfctstorm91/pfctstorm.html
with much information. There are further links here for specific satellite pictures and other information.

There have also been many scientific studies as the storm produced 100 ft waves as measured by local observational buoys.

USA Today has this to say about the storm on its website:
http://www.usatoday.com/weather/wdisguis.htm

Unfortunately, the storm is "too old" for many websites which began archiving storm information about the mid 1990s. However, I am sure that more will be added in the next few months as the popularity of the storm increases due to the motion picture.
