Meteorological Online Education

Question: The information on your website is great for general information on weather and weather forecasting, but I would like to learn more details with examples. Do you know of any courses that might be of help?

Answer: There are a number of meteorology education programs out there. I will mention but two here.

Penn State University

The first is a program from Penn State University which is a Certificate of Achievement in Weather Forecasting offerred through their extension Online Certification program. This specific program can earn you college credits at Penn State or other accredited institution.

Here is their Course Information:

"Whether you are an amateur weather enthusiast or a weather-related industry professional, enrolling in this online certificate program is a perfect way to enhance your career or degree. Through the online meteorology courses that compose this 12-credit certificate program of study, you can build a foundational understanding of contemporary forecasting techniques. All courses in the program can be completed around your own schedule, where and when it's most convenient for you."

"Expand Your Understanding of Weather Patterns: As a student in this program, you will have an opportunity to become a better-informed, critical consumer of weather-related news. You will also have a chance to use powerful, Web-based forecasting tools. There are no formal calculus or physics requirements for entrance to the program."

"Learn from Respected Leaders in the Field: As you complete each course in this program, you will interact online with attentive educators from one of the most highly respected meteorology programs in the United States."

The COMET® Program

The second is offered by The COMET® Program (Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education and Training at the University Center for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) at Boulder, CO. They offer a wide-ranging program which includes very specific educational modules.

Their Distance Education program "produces and delivers online, interactive professional development materials that also serve as readily available reference resources. The majority of these are available at no cost on our MetEd Website."
