Note Added September 2010:
The National Climate Extremes Committee, a branch of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. has confirmed that a hail stone that fell in Vivian, South Dakota on 23 July 2010set an American record for weight (1.94 pounds/0.88 kg) and also diameter (8 inches/ 20 cm). The hail stone's 18.5-inch (47 cm) circumference fell just shy of that hailstone record The massive chunk of ice collected by Punk Strom and quickly placed in his deep freeze weighed 1.9375 pounds (0.8788 kg) when he put it on the scale at the Vivian post office. Jim Scarlett, meteorologist in charge at the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, SD remarked "I described this one as cantaloupe-size." The July 23 storm sent hailstones that broke through roofs, leaving fist-size holes in interior ceilings smashing through windshields and causing at least five injuries to occupants of cars stranded along I-90. Massive hailstones pummeled the ground and the dents in the ground were still visible the following day, some as large and deep as coffee cans.
