Eric Sloane painting Cloud Symphony (One of my favourite Sloane paintings.)
On Weather
I believe that the sky was created for pure beholding; that one of man’s greatest pleasures can be simply looking at the sky.
I have tried to be both meteorological and philosophical about the sky, but I constantly find its spiritual qualities outweighing its weather influences. I believe that the sky was created for pure beholding; that one of man's greatest pleasures can be simply looking at the sky from Look At The Sky and Tell the Weather
Living with the skies and knowing what they were up to was once one of the joys of living.
If different qualities of air had different colors, the sky could look like the writhing flow of colored lights in those old-fashioned juke boxes, never quiet, always mixing.
from Look at the Sky and Tell the Weather
Quiet seemed in tune with the wind that haunted the high places like a hymn, and I felt as though I constantly walked in an atmospheric cathedral. The provocative landscape and overwhelming skyscapes stirred my emotion into a spiritual experience and wherever I looked there was a meaningful picture to be painted. It was there and then I decided to make painting my life work and to make the sky my theme. from Look At The Sky and Tell the Weather
The weather is with us wherever we are, yet nothing is more taken for granted than the daily drama of the skies.
In my mind's eye I see the atmospheric sea as a gaseous symphony that gyrates and squirms over the surface of the earth like the changing flow of colors in oil on sunlit waters. from The Book of Storms
Of two men looking at a sunset, the scientist will say, "Tomorrow will be clear," while the philosopher observes, "What a wonderful sunset!"
They say that lightning never strikes in the same place twice; that is sometimes so because once it strikes, the whole darn place often disappears.
Storms, like rainbows and sunsets, are special performances in the theater of weather. from The Book of Storms
You will seldom recall the good days, yet the most by-gone storm will leave an indelible impression on your memory. from The Book of Storms
Get friendly with your neighborhood weather — you'll find him good company. Look at the sky and tell the weather. from Look at the Sky and Tell the Weather
On Seasons
Toward the end of any summer day you may see these bad boys of the heavens sulking and brooding in the purple distance along the horizon. Those that were big enough to withstand the cloud-melting effect of sundown will continue into the dark like quarrelsome children who won't got to bed, disturbing the summer night with so-called heat lightning.
A few days ago I walked along the edge of the lake and was treated to the crunch and rustle of leaves with each step I made. The acoustics of this season are different and all sounds, no matter how hushed, are as crisp as autumn air.
The day after the first frost, when the old country store fired its pot-bellied stove, usually marked the beginning of winter. That was the time of the year when screen doors were taken down and stacked away in a back room, chairs were taken in from the porch to be placed around the stove, and a new barrel of crackers appeared within arm's reach.
