The Elders Speak

On Rain

dividerr

Rain is grace; rain is the sky condescending to the earth; without rain, there would be no life.
John Updike

I like rain. I like bad weather. I'm a fan of bad weather. Hurricanes. Blizzards. I love to see mother nature do her stuff. Well, rain is different. Particularly this rain: the rain that we have in the Pacific Northwest. It's not a torrential kind of rain, for the most part. It's very soft. It's a wonderful climate for a writer because it reduces temptation. It keeps you indoors. It turns you inward. It makes you introspective.
Tom Robbins

You feel the fertilizing influence of the rain in your mind.
Henry David Thoreau

How beautiful is the rain!
After the dust and the heat,
In the broad and fiery street,
In the narrow lane,
How beautiful is the rain!
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Rain in Summer

There's always a period of curious fear between the first sweet-smelling breeze and the time when the rain comes cracking down.
Don DeLillo, The Names

Let the rain kiss you.
Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops.
Let the rain sing you a lullaby.
Langston Hughes, April Rain Song

A steady, windriven rain composes music for the psyche. It not only nurtures and renews, it consecrates and sanctifies. It whispers in secret languages about the primordial essence of things.
Tom Robbins

It ain't no use to grumble and complain;
It's jest as cheap and easy to rejoice;
When God sorts out the weather and sends rain,
Why, rain's my choice.
James Whitcomb Riley, Rain

A good storm cloud full of lightning and rain on its way to its work on a sunny desert day is a glorious object.
John Muir, The Grand Canyon of the Colorado

It's a straight-on-the-edge deluge. The rain doesn't come in drops but in long streaks like macaroni.
Emily Carr

The monotone of the rain is beautiful,
And the sudden rise and slow relapse
Of the long multitudinous rain.
Carl Sandburg, Monotone, from "Chicago Poems"

One of those gentle, straight-down rainy days, when the rain begins by spotting the cultivated fields as if shaken from a pepper-box.
Henry David Thoreau

One of those singular freaks of Nature which, by reference to the dictionary, we find described as "the water or the descent of water that falls in drops from the clouds - shower," occurred here yesterday, and kept the community in a state of pleasant astonishment for the space of several hours.
Mark Twain, The San Francisco Daily Morning Call, August 23, 1864

So tumultuous was the downpour that we saw ducks sitting on farmhouse porches out of the rain.
Edwin Way Teale, Autumn Across America

The rain, the desolate rain!
Ceaseless, and solemn, and chill!
How it drips on the misty pane,
How it drenches the darkened sill!
Paul Hamilton Hayne, Windless Rain

The drops of rain became luminous like a display of miniature fireworks.
Dr Samuel O. Young, Galveston, Texas, September 1900.

The rain was in spurts -- now merely a spatter, now a deluge as if soneone wre throwing buckets of water.
George Stewart, Storm

Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, The Rainy Day

I discovered rain falls in shymphony, with winds playing bold crescendos on leaves and branches and swollen streams hitting the high notes. Pine duff mutes. Cool drop bounce staccato on new leaves.
Catherine Buni, Aristotle's Rainbow

God made rainy days, so gardeners could get the housework done.
Author Unknown

Still pouring. Raindrops squirm and wiggle on the window pane like restless children in a class room.
David Conover, One Man's Island

The rain is raining all around,
it falls on field and tree.
It rains on the umbrellas here,
And on the ships at sea.
Robert Louis Stevenson, Rain

I have seen a lot of rain in my day and there is more to it than just water falling from the sky, for by reading about the weather and keeping watch I found there are many kinds of rain. There is the fine misty rain of spring and fall, the heavy thundershower of July, and the steady rain that beats down for days at a time when a big storm is passing over.
John J. Rowlands, Cache Lake Country

A mizzling and rainy day with thick driving fog; a drizzling rain or "drisk" as one called it.
Henry David Thoreau, The River

Dashing in big drops on the narrow pane, and making mournful music for the mind, I hear the singing of the frequent rain.
William Henry Burleigh

Rain is balm, holy oil, lullaby and gray the most mystical color in nature's pallete.
David Laskin, Rains All The Time

Ever notice how the rain sounds,
Like an old LP when you lay the needle down?
The Undesireables, Rain Bed

It ain't no use to grumble and complain;
It's jest as cheap and easy to rejoice;
When God sorts out the weather and sends rain,
Why, rain's my choice.
James Whitcomb Riley, Rain
