Quote of the Month

― Joseph Conrad, Typhoon, 1902

This Month in Weather History

March 2012 Not only was March 2012 the warmest March in the US since record keeping began in 1895, it was also the second most extreme month for warmth in U.S. history, according to NOAA. Only one month of the more than 1,400 months that have passed since the U.S. weather records began in 1895, January 2006, has had a larger departure from its average temperature than March 2012. In addition, 25 states east of the Rockies expereinced their warmest March on record, and 15 additional states recorded a top-ten warmest March. NOAA's National Climatic Data Center database indicates every state in the nation experienced a record warm daily temperature during March. According to preliminary data, there were 15,272 warm temperature records broken (7,755 daytime records, 7,517 nighttime records for warmest minima), more than for any month except July 1936. In 21 instances, the the nighttime temperature were as warm, or warmer, than the existing record daytime temperature for the given date.
